The News & Observer’s guidebook to getting grants

The News & Observer, McClatchy’s Raleigh-based outlet, has created a set of guidelines for newsrooms seeking funds. With the understanding that most journalists are not formally trained to undertake the task of applying for funding, the News & Observer reached out to McClatchy newsrooms, key stakeholders, and the community to fill in the gaps for journalists who need guidance when applying for grants.

The results culminated in a guidebook which provides step-by-step instructions and tips for how to build relationships with funders, craft grant applications, identify viable projects to allocate funds, and more.

This resource was created as part of the Table Stakes training program, a Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund and American Press Institute initiative which guides outlets and journalists through newsroom challenges.
