Knight offers guidelines for newsroom funding

The struggles of local newsrooms across the country have led to a dearth in coverage of community issues such as transportation, access to health care, clean water, food security, and affordable housing. In the last decade, more and more foundations have started to invest in local newsrooms to increase coverage and information about topics pertaining to these challenges. Such investments not only support the work local newsrooms do to inform communities, but also bolster coverage of the important local issues that foundations support.

The John and James L. Knight Foundation has provided a guideline with steps, strategies, and case studies for local foundations looking to fund nonprofit, for-profit, and collaborative journalism. By working with other seasoned funders, convening stakeholders, supporting digital initiatives, and funding specific projects, foundations supporting local newsrooms can begin to support a healthy and thriving community. Here’s where to start.
